Returning with a blue bank deposit bag he opened it and pulled out lots of green currency. âHere you are. A mix of hundreds and fifties. Is that okay?â
âSure. Can I keep the blue bank bag? Will stop the bills from flying around inside my pack.â
âOf course you can. That is why I brought it out this way.â A big customer friendly smile now filled his face. âWe at Front Range Jewelry are experts in fine watches, collectible coins, gold necklaces and plenty more. Feel free to return to examine our merchandise!â
I picked up the blue bag, now filled with dozens of green bills. Thirty thousand and forty-nine dollars worth to be exact. According to the sale receipt he had put on top of the bag. Nothing he had appealed to me. No hot smartphone. No 5G tablets. No black hiking boots. Still, he gave me the price I demanded. So I gave him a true smile.
âThank you, Mr. Jones. I will keep your invitation in mind. Now, I need to head out to my bank before I start my job.â
âOh?â I was almost at his front door. âWhere do you work?â
âCafé Tribal. Iâm one of the waitresses. We fix all kinds of food for both supernaturals and human folks. And we carry booze of all kinds.â
âWow. Iâve seen the café as Iâve driven up and down Folsom. Just never stopped in. Been eating TV meals at home now that my wife has passed on. And my kids moved out of state.â
Wham. His loss of his wife and his distance from kids hit me. And taught me to avoid first impression judgments. This guy had his life problems just like me. And everybody else. I waved at him as I opened the door.
âWell, the café offers lunch and dinner until midnight. If you show up for a meal I might be able to get you ten percent off your check.â
âGreat! Iâll be there.â
The store door closed behind me. The early morning in the middle of September was yellow sunny, cool with a light breeze coming down from the Front Range of the Rockies, and dozens of green glows filled the sidewalks on either side of 28th as people walked to a shop, a parking lot, a job or just touristed. Though the best tourist places were more in-town where Pearl Street met Broadway. Still, Folsom was a popular district. And 28th was just a few blocks over from it. Looking up I spotted a black winged shape far above. It looked like a giant raven. I knew better.
âHey Abner! Sold the gold. Got the money. Now, time to head to the local USAA branch. Then maybe coffee and a Danish before work.â
The black bat turned on one side and slide lower, until I could see his blue eyes looking at me.
âWell, I deserve better than Starbucks fruit rolls! Helping you find all those gold pebbles is worth a real reward. Like maybe a fruit plate at one of the bistro cafes with outside dining?â
That would involve him riding on my shoulder.
